Conely Creek Trail Improvements

CESO partnered with Duke Energy to design a 2-mile trail system in Sawmills, North Carolina, that seamlessly integrates with the natural terrain while minimizing grading and site disturbance. The project focused on preserving existing landscape features while enhancing accessibility and user experience.

Beyond minimizing environmental impact, the design prioritized connectivity to new park amenities, careful navigation through the existing disc golf course, and strategic viewpoints overlooking Lake Rhodhiss. Our involvement began with comprehensive due diligence, evaluating site access, grading constraints, utilities, stormwater management, and regulatory requirements. These insights informed the development of a concept plan, planting sheets, and site development plans, which served as the foundation for final construction drawings.

Like many trail systems, this site contained multiple tributaries and streams, presenting challenges related to water flow and drainage. Our team thoughtfully aligned the trail and adjusted grades to ensure proper water management and prevent erosion. Key considerations included natural flow patterns, flood risk mitigation, and the trail’s impact on surrounding hydrology. Pedestrian bridges and boardwalks were incorporated to enhance accessibility and user safety while preserving sensitive areas.

Navigating environmental regulations was another critical aspect of the project. The proximity to water bodies required adherence to various permitting requirements, a process our team successfully managed to ensure compliance. By balancing environmental sensitivity with functional design, we delivered a sustainable and resilient trail system that enhances community access to nature while safeguarding the site’s ecological integrity.
