Trail Improvements
CESO partnered with Duke Energy on a 2-mile trail system in Sawmills, North Carolina, to develop a site design that would conform to the natural ground features with minimal grading and clearing of the site, where possible.
In addition to minimizing disturbance to the natural elements throughout the area, emphasis was made on connecting to various new amenities within the park, navigating through the existing disc golf course, and providing views into Lake Rhodhiss. Our team’s involvement in the project commenced with conducting due diligence concerning site access, grades, utilities, stormwater, development regulations, and permitting requirements. Our due diligence activities informed the preparation of a concept plan, planting sheets, and site development plans which the client and CESO could use as the basis for final construction drawings.
As with many trail systems, this site has a number of tributaries and streams with the potential to introduce water flow. Our design team carefully planned the trail alignment and grade to ensure proper drainage and prevent erosion. Among their considerations were the natural flow patterns, potential flood risks, and the impact of the trail on the hydrological system. Additionally, as we were designing trails near streams and tributaries, accessibility and user safety were also considered with the use of pedestrian bridges and boardwalks. Our team assessed potential hazards associated with water crossings to develop appropriate site solutions. Working near bodies of water also requires compliance with various environmental regulations and permits. Our team navigated a challenging permitting process to ensure compliance with regulations.
